Firefox 1.5

Wednesday, November 30th, 2005

Firefox 1.5 has been released and continues to push forward in the new “Browser Wars”.

The best new feature in my opinion is the “drag and drop reordering for browser tabs”. And the automated update feature isn’t bad either.

Get it here.

The New AT&T Logo

AT&T Logo

Is it just me or is the new AT&T logo a bit too busy? I think it’s the dark blue curved lines “inside” of the logo that push me over the edge. Without them I think the logo would pack a greater punch. But keep in mind that this is coming from a guy who values simplicity in design.

In other related news, read about the AT&T / Cingular branding changes. It sounds like the communication company needs to communicate better in order to save both time & money.

Purdue University BoilerCast

Wednesday, November 9th, 2005

This fall Purdue University rolled out their BoilerCast service which allows professors to easily digitally record lectures and make them available to students as podcasts, Windows Media streams and Real Player streams within minutes of the end of class. I wish this had existed back when I was in college because it would have saved me time and money by not having to deal with “tape services” whenever I happened to miss a lecture.

Pampers Kandoo Ad

This advertisement for Pampers Kandoo immediately caught my attention. While the colors used make it stand out, what really drew my attention was the frog wiping its rear. I can’t begin to imagine what behind the door conversations took place in regards to that. I personally think it’s funny yet not too edgy for the majority of the population…but I’m sure the people who like to complain about that sort of thing will.

To see the frog in action, be sure to check out the products section of their web site.

WordPress MU

Monday, November 7th, 2005

This weekend I gave WordPress MU a test run and have came to the conclusion that at this moment I can’t recommend that anyone use it in a production environment unless they’re *really* comfortable with how it works.

Don’t get me wrong. It’s a nice system once you get it up and running. But this is still considered pre-alpha software. I have a great understanding of what I’m doing when it comes to installing software, yet installation was a bit frustrating even for *me*, mainly because decent documentation is hard to come.

If you want to give it a whirl, try it out on a development domain first (it should be setup at your web root and you have to setup a wild card DNS entry). And make sure that you’re comfortable with figuring things out on your own (there are forums that may prove helpful). And you should have a decent understanding of how Apache & PHP work.

With that said, I think the future of this package could prove to be a bright one, but it needs time to mature first. I’ll be keeping my eyes open for a stable release, but until then I’ll only be testing out the nightly builds from time-to-time.
